Where in Seattle or surrounding areas do you shop for ingredients for Caribbean cooking? Caribbean food is a delight! It requires special ingredients...some of which are readily available in local chain grocery stores. Thyme, goat pepper[Habanero-Central America; Scotch Bonnet-Jamaica], and other herbs are essential ingredients in Bahamian and Jamaican dishes and are readily available in QFC, Safeway, Red Apple, and other local grocery stores. Now if I want snapper, Uwajimaya is the place to go. It's local rock fish and the closest I'm going to get to snapper.
Other ingredients are scarce to say the least. I am still searching for conch. What Caribbean food ingredients have you found easily and what ingredients seem elusive?
The Caribbean community seems under served and under represented. Still, I'll wager if you put out a call in the right places, you'll find a larger community exists either by heritage or by respect and appreciation for the culture. This group is created to serve our larger community in finding ingredients to keep traditional Caribbean foods alive in our community.
